For our October 16th meeting, Astrophotographer Mark Wetzel will give a talk on one of his favorite objects to photograph and study: Nebulae. Mark writes “When we observe or photograph the beautiful nebulae in our galaxy, questions often arise. What are these vast structures? How did they form? What will happen to them over cosmological time scales? Every time I investigate an object that I imaged, a wealth of information can be found, some contradictory. Some questions are answered but more arise. Luckily, the laws of physics apply everywhere, and we can take comfort in that.
“This talk is about Nebulae, including emission, dark, reflection, planetary, and supernova remnants. Basic definitions will be reviewed along with a brief history of discovery. A laymen’s overview of the physics and chemistry will be presented. Imaging techniques for each nebula type will be described along with some example photos.”
Since Mark lives out of town, he’ll be delivering his talk via Zoom. We’ll project it on the planetarium dome and have live interaction, so it should be just as if he were there in person. At this meeting we’ll continue our tradition of a slide show of recent astrophotos taken by club members. We’ve decided to keep the last Astroscan in our lending library, so the monthly telescope giveaway is over for now. We might do it again on occasion with other donated telescopes, though, so you might still get a chance at a free scope sometime down the line.
The meeting is at 7:00 on Thursday, October 16th at the Eugene Science Center planetarium, 2300 Leo Harris Parkway in Eugene (behind Autzen Stadium). Note that both the east and the west entrances off Martin Luther King Boulevard are open again.
Dues are now due! Our dues year starts October 1st, so it’s time to get your payment in and stay up to date. Dues are still the same low $25 they’ve been for years. We accept cash, checks made out to Eugene Astronomical Society, or PayPal to eugeneastroboard@gmail.com. PayPal users, choose “Friends and Family” option or add $1 to cover fees. Let us know in the comments section who the dues are for! PayPal only reports email addresses. Everyone: please provide any updated contact information along with your dues. Note that joining the email list does not make you a member of the club. You must fill out an application and pay your dues in order to be a member in good standing.
The meeting starts at 7:00 on Thursday the 16th at the Eugene Science Center planetarium. Rumor has it that both ends of Leo Harris Parkway (the road leading to the Science Center) are open again.
