Monthly Meeting: Building the Hubble Telescope (Replica)

  • Eugene Science Center 2300 Leo Harris Parkway Eugene, OR, 97401 United States (map)

Most of us have seen Lauren Wingert’s beautiful fully-functional replica of the Hubble Space Telescope. She brings it to star parties, where the telescope itself wows people just as much as the view through it. The likeness to the original is so amazing that Lauren’s scope was featured in Sky & Telescope magazine. Yet it may surprise you to learn that Lauren was not an experienced telescope maker when she built it. She had modified several telescopes, but she’d never built one from scratch and by her own admission she had no woodworking skills to speak of. Yet starting with an 8-inch mirror she got at an EAS swap meet, she came up with dozens of innovative ideas that led to one of the most incredible telescopes on any star party field. How did she do it? What pieces and parts and challenges and solutions were there for this entry level telescope build? Come to our August 21st meeting and find out how the “Hubble Look-Alike” came together.
