November Virtual Meeting – Thursday November 19, 2020 Club President Andy Edelen digs further into the subject of identification with this month’s talk, “What’s In A Name, Part II: The Deep Sky.”

November 19, 2020 - February 28, 2021

Club President Andy Edelen digs further into the subject of identification with this month’s talk, “What’s In A Name, Part II: The Deep Sky.”

Last year, we discussed the different star catalogues, from common names to the Hipparcos catalogue, and from multiple stars to variable stars. In this talk, we’ll discuss galactic and extragalactic objects, from the Messier and Herschel catalogues to the CGCG and AGC catalogues, encompassing some of the smallest of deep-sky objects (planetary nebulae) to the largest structures in the Universe (galaxy clusters), and how they got their names. We’ll learn why one Messier object is also NGC 1068, UGC 2188, PGC 10266, MCG-0-7-83, CGCG 388-98, and Arp 37, and just why we need all of these catalogues anyway.
